Job description

The project ‘Climate Resilient and Sustainable Energy Supply in the Caribbean (Cli-RES)’ is supporting the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat and their Member States in its efforts, to making a shift toward greater utilization of sustainable energy options and to strengthen the resilience of their energy systems. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and has an additional financial allocation (co-funding) from the European Union. The overall objective of Cli-RES is to implement effectively measures for a sustainable and climate resilient energy supply in selected Caribbean Countries. The project is providing technical assistance to all 15 CARICOM Member States.

Your tasks

  • Strategic and technical advice for CARICOM on climate resilience aspects as well as enhancement of the topic for CARICOM on a regional level and for its member states (climate finance, relevant aspects of the Agenda 2030, NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions) implementation)
  • Process coordination for the development and adoption of Integrated Resource and Resilience Plans, incl. investment plans, on a national level between all relevant stakeholder such as Regulator, Utility, Ministries, NGO’s
  • Support the strengthening of the regional quality infrastructure for renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies and products with focus on increased resilience towards climate change caused weather events and natural disasters
  • Developing of forecast models for the impact assessment on the energy infrastructure through extreme weather events and advice Utilities to introduce planning instruments and management approaches to increase the resilience of their energy system
  • Identification of Climate Finance Options for (large) climate resilience investment projects and implementation of NDC’s

Your profile

  • Master’s Degree in Climate Change related disciplines, in environmental sciences, energy engineering, natural resource management or related fields with specific academic or professional background related to climate change adaptation/mitigation, climate resilience, energy planning, renewable energy, energy efficiency or a related field
  • Several years of experiences in Climate Change issues, formulation of NAMAs (Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions) and NAPs, NDC programmes and related communications, planning and implementation of mitigation and adaptation measures within either the public or private sector, with focus on macro issues at the national and multinational levels
  • Sound knowledge on Climate Finance, ideally with practical experiences in climate finance project development e.g. form the Green Climate Fund, Adaptation Fund, Climate Investment Fund or Global Environmental Facility
  • Good understanding of the necessary design for a climate resilient energy system (utility level)
  • Sound knowledge of sustainable energy technologies and their application in Developing countries is highly desirable
  • Excellent English skills
  • Driving licence
