Developer Advocate (m/f/d)

Developer Advocate (m/f/d)

Organisation: Wikimedia Deutschland e. V.
Ort: Berlin, Deutschland

At Wikimedia Deutschland e.V. we help create, collect and distribute free knowledge.

In 2004, volunteer Wikipedia activists founded the non-profit association Wikimedia Deutschland in Berlin, which now consists of over 100,000 members and 160 full-time staff.

Free knowledge leads to a fairer world. Wikipedia is the most important online knowledge collection of our time. The German Wikipedia alone records almost 1 billion page views per month for a total of 2.6 million articles. We - Wikimedia Deutschland e. V. - support the volunteers of Wikipedia and its sister projects, develop free software, such as Wikidata, and advocate for free access to knowledge, the opening of education and research, and more common good orientation in data policy.

For our Team Wikibase Suite, based in Berlin, we are looking for a permanent Developer Advocate (m/f/d), full-time or part-time (min. 30h/week), as soon as possible.

About the position & the team:

You will be working with the team that promotes, supports and improves the software behind Wikibase Suite, an open-source software bundle that knowledge projects can install on their own infrastructure, fill with data, and share with the world. You will be supporting the team with high level technical support and knowledge of our products while representing our technical users needs within the organisation and the community.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Assisting community developers with technical issues, answering their questions, and providing guidance for integration and implementation of our products
  • Answering internal technical questions and supporting the partnerships team
  • Expanding and improving technical educational content including blog posts, tutorials, sample code, documentation, videos, and presentations
  • Developer outreach and community building: organising and running educational events, enabling knowledge sharing and open discussion
  • Collect community developer feedback and synthesise insights, concerns and feedback for internal teams
  • Attending external partner meetings to provide technical support and a developer viewpoint

What we offer:

  • A participative collaboration guided by our values: participation, diversity, free and open access, equity, sustainability and respectful collaboration
  • Benefits: 30 vacation days and additional time off on Dec. 24th and New Year's Eve, public transport ticket, access to our company pension scheme allowance, continued salary in the event of sick children
  • All overtime is recorded and converted into compensatory time off
  • An office located in the center of Berlin and hybrid work options
  • In-house training and continued professional development as well as free external life coaching (professional advice and coaching on job-related and private issues)

What makes you right for this role:

  • You have experience communicating with developer communities, understanding the dynamics, best practices, and challenges connected to this
  • You have experience as a developer and have used technologies like PHP, TypeScript, JavaScript or docker in an collaborative environment
  • You are familiar with software architecture and design best practices (SOLID), continuous integration and continuous delivery, containerization, version control systems, Test-Driven Development as well as CI testing, End-to-end testing, unit tests and Automated Testing
  • You enjoy engaging with new people and helping to solve their problems. You are not afraid of making mistakes and you learn from them
  • You have experience gathering developer feedback and helping Product teams turn that into practical tasks
  • You have experience and enjoy creating useful and engaging educational content and presentations and you enjoy being part of the community
  • You are able to communicate fluently in English
