At Wikimedia Deutschland e.V. we help create, collect and distribute free knowledge.
In 2004, volunteer Wikipedia activists founded the non-profit association Wikimedia Deutschland in Berlin, which now consists of over 100,000 members and 160 full-time staff.
Free knowledge leads to a fairer world. Wikipedia is the most important online knowledge collection of our time. The German Wikipedia alone records almost 1 billion page views per month for a total of 2.6 million articles. We - Wikimedia Deutschland e. V. - support the volunteers of Wikipedia and its sister projects, develop free software, such as Wikidata, and advocate for free access to knowledge, the opening of education and research, and more common good orientation in data policy.
We are looking for a Junior Software Engineer (m/f/d) to join and support our Agile development team. The position is based in Berlin and we offer hybrid workplace options.
You will be joining the team that is hacking on the core of Wikipedia and its sister projects. We're busy improving and further developing MediaWiki and its extensions in close collaboration with the communities of volunteers based on their feedback and wishes.
The engineering team you will join currently consists of four experienced software engineers who are eager to help and support you in becoming a skilled MediaWiki developer and have a significant impact on our mission.
We program mostly in PHP and JavaScript. New frontend components will use Vue.js and TypeScript and old legacy components will be gradually migrated as well. Besides that, we’re using a variety of other technologies and tools. Prior knowledge and experience in specific programming languages or technologies are not a requirement. We believe they can all be learned on the job and Wikimedia, your team, and your line manager will support you with this.
Then apply now! Send us your detailed application documents (Resume & Motivational Letter (yes, we read them)) via our job portal. We kindly ask you to refrain from application photos and information on date of birth, marital status and parents. Knowing there is an imbalance in the industry we would like to encourage especially non-male applicants to apply, no matter if you believe you satisfy all requirements. We look forward to hearing from you!
Our HR team will be happy to answer your questions. Please contact us via jobs@wikimedia.de.
